By now, most have heard the news from Lucasfilm that there will be a new trilogy of Star Wars movies in the works after “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” premieres later this year and the conclusion to the current trilogy, “Episode IX,” is released sometime in 2019:

“Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.”

According to the official Star Wars press release, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson is expected to help develop this new trilogy, which will “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”

The news has Star Wars fans excited, and many have taken to speculating what this new trilogy might be about. There are veritable tomes full of Star Wars lore that has yet to hit the screen. Some see the series taking a turn toward noir detective stories, delving deeper into the seedy underbelly of the Star Wars universe.

Settings like the casino city of Canto Bight, which will play a pivotal role in the upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” seem ripe for telling tales of deception and danger, filled with mob bosses, criminals, card sharps and hard-boiled heroes who want to do a little bit of good in the middle of a confusing situation.

Of course, there’s skepticism about whether a new trilogy can really capture something new, even given the fact that Johnson is being given a “blank canvas” to craft an exciting story that deviates from usual Star Wars fare. Inverse Entertainment recently posed “3 Big Questions” regarding the future of the Star Wars film franchise, highlighting the belief that certain elements must be present for a film to fit in the Star Wars universe and that having too many films runs the risk of diluting the magic that makes Star Wars special.

Still, most dedicated fans remain hopeful about what the next trilogy might bring, and Lucasfilms, for its part, seems confident that Johnson can create something special:

“He’s a creative force, and watching him craft ‘The Last Jedi’ from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

It will be interesting to see what new direction Star Wars takes, and as the current trilogy wraps up, plenty of rumors abound about what new characters and storylines might come next.
